Project: Income Generation
Area: Women’s Empowerment
Coordinator: Teresa Lumani
Description: The income generation / mother’s programme is flourishing. Destitute HIV+ women are referred into this programme by the Etafeni counsellors and community care workers. Our social worker helps them access social grants where applicable. They learn to do beadwork, to sew, smock and quilt. A weekly lunchtime menu is planned by Etafeni’s dietician and the income generators take it in turns to cook daily using the vegetables and herbs from our food garden. Many of the women in our Income Generation Programme have children at our pre-school and/or after-school.
Teresa Lumani, Patrick Sathorar, Nomalady Mshweshwe and Glenda van den Oever guide these ladies (45 at present) in the production of quality-controlled artefacts. The crafts that are produced, with advice from local designers, are sold with great success at outlets both in Cape Town as well as internationally. Part of the Income Generation Programme space at Etafeni includes a shop where visitors and the local community can view some of the beautiful garments and place orders and make purchases.
Although we have a lot of women on our books, many have left our Income Generation Programme since its inception and are now working more lucratively elsewhere. We try to keep no more and no less than 45 women actively participating in the Income Generation Programme and being cared for – but numbers fluctuate at different times of the year. At Christmas time, for instance, many of our mothers return to the Eastern Cape.
This programme provides HIV-positive mothers and caregivers with a sense of self-worth by helping them to earn an income. It also provides them with the nutrition, support and therapy they need to live. We educate these women/caregivers around children’s rights and the importance of good parenting for the children in their care.
